And here is the three-way spline, after cleanup and some fitting, inserted into one of three curved stretchers. The hand (mine) gives a sense of scale. It's a tiny little thing, kind of cute.
A Cool Little Spline for a Three-way Joint
The base of this table has three curved stretchers. One stretcher comes off each of the three legs and the stretchers join together at the center line of the table. To facilitate that three- way joint, I'm using a spline (or slip tenon, or loose tenon, or whatever have you). This one is made of 5 layers of shop sawn cherry veneer, with the grain direction of the layers oriented to provide for reinforced long grain in each "spoke". The take home: it's a cool little spline.
Mortising Curved Parts
Routing some tiny mortises in the ends of curved parts. The curved pieces are part of the table base.
A Studio Fit for Making Furniture
For those of you that haven't visited my studio since last spring, the exterior trim, siding, gutters and site work is finished. Just like my furniture, the detailing on the studio is very precise and refined.
Curly Maple...Wow.
The morning sun on the table top. The angle of the light makes the curl in the maple just explode. That is raw maple, no finish. Just hand planed.
