I'm redesigning (and remaking) the table aprons. I wasn't satisfied with the bent laminated aprons or the joinery options for the apron-to-leg joints. Back to the drawing board.
Splined, Mitered Three-Way Joint
And here is that three-way joint, fit and ready for shaping of the parts before assembly.
A Time for Splines
And here is the three-way spline, after cleanup and some fitting, inserted into one of three curved stretchers. The hand (mine) gives a sense of scale. It's a tiny little thing, kind of cute.
A Cool Little Spline for a Three-way Joint
The base of this table has three curved stretchers. One stretcher comes off each of the three legs and the stretchers join together at the center line of the table. To facilitate that three- way joint, I'm using a spline (or slip tenon, or loose tenon, or whatever have you). This one is made of 5 layers of shop sawn cherry veneer, with the grain direction of the layers oriented to provide for reinforced long grain in each "spoke". The take home: it's a cool little spline.
Mortising Curved Parts
Routing some tiny mortises in the ends of curved parts. The curved pieces are part of the table base.
