The Oliver planer was moved successfully this past weekend. Here it is, hanging under the gantry just before I backed the pickup underneath. The gantry performed like a champ, I think the design was appropriate - the proper mix of strength, rigidity and portability. Many thanks to Buzz H for his assistance in moving this beast.
Preparing to move 1200 Pounds of Cast Iron
The gantry is built, most of the gear is organized. I think I'm ready for tomorrow's move. An Oliver 399 is coming home tomorrow. Sorry for the crappy image...in my basement.
Joining Table Legs to a Round Apron
With the apron done, it's time to move on to the leg to apron joinery: sliding dovetail bridle joints. Here is my setup for cutting the mortises in the legs. Two cuts per leg to define the mortise and the material between kerfs will be removed at the bandsaw.
Veneer on the New Apron
Here the veneer is being applied to the apron. I'm using a caul made of 3 layers of 3/8" bending plywood (whose edges are wrapped in blue tape to protect it from adhesive squeeze out). The 3 layer caul was glued up previously on the apron, so I didn't have to fight with them when working on pressing on the veneer.
Fit, Glue, Clamp. Repeat.
Continuing with the apron...here's the second course of white cedar. Fit, glue, clamp. Reminds me of gym, tan, laundry.
