Three little panels for the sideboard case bottom, made of quartersawn cherry. I'll mill them to fit the grooves in the rails and stiles, and hope to have this bottom assembled today.
Deep Thoughts
The sideboard case bottom is frame and panel construction. Or at least it is now. Originally it was going to be just an open rail/stile frame with no panels, but a bit of thought this morning convinced me to add panels. Time for more mortises, slip tenons and panels. Here are the drawer runners, I'm pre-gluing the slip tenons before assembly. Making furniture (and lots of other things) is a series of decisions. Hopefully you make the right ones. Consistently.
The Base is Complete
And here is the recess, after routing. The corners need to be squared up, but the base is now essentially finished except for prep and finishing. I'll do that after the case is made.
Routing the Recess in the Sideboard Base
To rout the recess in the top of the base, I made an MDF jig to provide a surface for the router to ride on, and which also acts as the guide for a top bearing copy router bit. To rout the recess required routing small areas, moving clamps, routing the next area, etc.
Lunchtime!
Today's lunch buddies.
