Ready For Reinforcements

The mortises have been cut, the damaged sections have been removed and the joints cleaned up. Next step is cutting and fitting the gusset that will reinforce the joint.

The Mini Mighty Router

Here's the router setup used to cut the mortises from the previous post. The blue tape on the clamps keeps the sliding cross bars from rattling around and/or getting in the way.

Rocking the Joinery

The next step is to cut the joinery. I used a palm router and 1/4" spiral bit to cut these mortises.

Laying Out The Joinery

Next step on the rocker repair: layout. With the rocker stabilized with the setup from yesterday, I lay out the joinery in preparation for cutting.

Rocker Repair

Here's my approach to this rocking chair repair. First step: re-establish the shape of the damaged rocker. I did this using a band clamp, a piece of MDF (and clamps) and a few "sticks" wedged into the chair framing. This setup allows me to re-establish this shape as I perform the various processes involved. The slight flat spot in the rocker seems to be a previously existing condition.
